EUROPEAN ASSOCIATION FOR GESTALT THERAPY

www.eagt.org

On the 5th of May, 1985, 13 representatives from Gestalt associations and institutes in 11 European countries met in Germany to found the European Association for Gestalt Therapy (EAGT). Sincce then Gestalt therapists, training institutes and national associations from Austria, Belgium, France, Great Britain, Germany, Greece, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Check Republic, Macedonia, Russia, the Netherlands and other countries have joined to make up the present membership of EAGT. Currently applications from several other European states are being considered.

Goals. The aim of the EAGT is to promote Gestalt therapy in Europe, to combine and exchange knowledge and resources, to foster a high professional standard for Gestalt therapy and to encourage research.

Training Standards. In order to achieve these goals the EAGT seeks to upgrade the standard of Gestalt therapy training in Europe. After several years of intensive research into European Gestalt therapy training and practice, a number of common denominators have been worked out.

The EAGT expects its members to meet high standards. At present minimum although comprehensive criteria for training requirements have been adopted in order to accomodate the wide diversity of social and cultural conditions in European countries where Gestalt therapy is being developed.

The EAGT will continue to seek to improve these standards and will in the near future create a European Register of Gestalt practitioners.

The EAGT has ratified a code of ethics for its membership.

The EAGT is the European Wide Awarding Organization in the European Association for Psychotherapy. It is the association that confirms the award of the European Certificate of Gestalt Psychotherapist.

Activities. In order to provide an opportunity for European colleagues to meet and exchange ideas and experiences, the EAGT hosts a European Conference in a different country every 3 years. Other scientific and political activities are carried out by the EAGT, like a European Conference of Writers, which aims to foster the writing of colleagues and the broadcasting of writings in different languages, a newsletter to be spread to members and colleagues who are interested in Gestalt therapy.

Elections of the president and officers of the Board are also held every 3 years.
